Food and Farming Quiz Raises Over £350

Farm Crisis Network’s West Wales group recently announced the results of their 2009 Food and Farming Quiz which raised over £350 for the charity. The first prizewinners, Alex Ross and Hannah Hithersay, are pictured here being presented with a cheque for £50 by the sponsor, agronomist Phil Rees of PRAg, Mountain Farm, Broadway. The winner of the second prize – decided on a tiebreak as both had 18 of 20 questions correct – was Mike Hall from Y Felin, the mill and bakery at St Dogmaels.

Chairman Rev Jeremy Martineau, said “We were delighted with the response to our quiz – the questions were quite challenging but everyone told us that they had learned a great deal as they had looked for the answers. Fundraising is difficult and time-consuming for all charities, but we always try to make our efforts fun and informative at the same time. It is much more rewarding than selling raffle tickets – it was great to see people discussing the questions together at events and entering into the spirit of it.”

Jill Gibson, area coordinator, added “It was lovely to meet these two young people, Alex and Hannah – Alex comes from Milford Haven, and although they live in Bristol where Alex is still a student, they enjoy coming back here for holidays. They fully deserved to win – they are dedicated to using local food, and insist that even students can afford to live more healthily and cheaply by doing so. They use their local farm shops, and bought the quiz whilst at the Haverfordwest Farmers’ Market which they always try to visit when in Pembrokeshire.”
