Continued rise in workload for FCN
2007 proved to be another challenging and busy year for FCN, with calls to the FCN Helpline at some points five times the level normally received, and the increased level of workload continues in 2008.
Last year saw a catalogue of problems for farmers, beginning with the summer flooding, then Foot & Mouth Disease, Avian Influenza and the much-feared arrival of Bluetongue disease and their associated movement restrictions. Many, particularly livestock farmers, are still struggling to cope with the impacts of these events on their businesses and families. During the year FCN volunteers provided pastoral and practical support to over 1,400 ‘cases’ involving around 4,000 people from farming families across the UK.
FCN is experiencing a continued increased workload in 2008 with the many challenges facing farming people and families, including the impacts of last year’s problems, ongoing problems surrounding the Single Payment Scheme and the Rural Payments Agency, increased fuel, feed and other input prices, and the on-going threat of Bovine TB.
