Hill Farm Allowance
The Government is committed to handling the problems of overpayment of Hill Farm Allowance as sensitively as possible. In answer to a question from Baroness Byford in the House of Lords, the DEFRA Minister of State, Lord Hunt, admitted that the final figures for 2006 are not yet known but that between 1,000 and 2,000 farmers will be affected with the total value of overpayment between £1 million and £2 million.
He went on to confirm that there will be a range of options with repayment being made over six months with the possible extension of time if there are particular hardship issues.
Lord Hunt paid tribute to the work of the relevant farming support charities and promised that DEFRA will remain in touch with charities during this very difficult time.
