Impact of 2007 Flooding and FMD & Bluetongue outbreaks
FCN has compiled a paper looking at the impact the 2007 Flooding and FMD & Bluetongue outbreaks have had on the farming community. The paper draws on the observations of FCN personnel providing help and support to those affected across England & Wales.
The crises of 2007 affected many in the farming community, but the longer-term impacts for some are in danger of being over-looked.

2007 saw a very significant increase in workload for FCN – at times FCN’s Helpline was receiving up to five times more calls than in the same period the previous year (which also saw a rise on the year before). Together with local churches, FCN provided help and support to those who contacted FCN, and also worked proactively to provide support to those in the most affected parts of the country, for example in the areas directly around the disease outbreaks.
As those affected by the crises work through the implications for them, their family and their business, FCN’s work continues in supporting them for as long as needed. From previous experience, FCN expects its workload to remain high through 2008 as a result of the severe problems of 2007. This will clearly be a challenge to FCN and will require the necessary resources, both in terms of volunteers for the work and funding for the cost. The work has been greatly helped by emergency funding from Defra as well as an appeal spear-headed by FCN’s Patron, HRH The Prince of Wales, for which FCN is very grateful.
